On March 12, Gov. Fallin signed into law Senate Bill 1959

Let me bring some clarity to the issue of adding 300 hours of instructional time to our work year and the U.S. Department of Education’s approval of Oklahoma’s Waiver Application.
- The AFT has not been involved with the committee that made a proposal to add time to our work year. We do not have a representative on the committee, have not provided input, nor were we asked to participate.
- Any extension of your workday or work year must be negotiated. The district has not informed us of their desire to negotiate this issue.

The Oklahoma City AFT has for some time been advocating for education reform, being part of the solution, not part of the problem. AFT president Randi Weingarten on Feb. 24 proposed a new way to align teacher development and evaluation to due process for tenured teachers. Weingarten laid out a three-step process consisting of clear standards for what teachers should know and be able to do, a time-limited improvement and support plan for teachers deemed to be unsatisfactory according to the evaluation standards, and a hearing process that can take no longer than 100 days, which in many cases would be even more expedient.
